Because as a new keeper, their diving technique will not be mastered yet, so this means new goalkeepers are prone to getting dead hips, knees and elbows which can be horrendously painful and can actually put off new goalkeepers continuing playing in goal.

Also these garments also prevent grass burns, which are much worse and a lot more painful than getting dead elbows, knees and hips.
